Presence is a Spell

September
From Lump performance, 2024, artwork by Suzanne Belle Stone

New Moon Greetings,

A friend recently did a protection spell for her home. The next day, a delivery of wood chips arrived early and was dumped—unexpectedly—across her driveway. Not where she planned, but right on time. A literal boundary appeared. That’s how magic often works: subtle, precise, a little uncanny. Presence as a kind of spell.

This current eclipse season returns us to the same astrological degrees that were active in September 2024 and March 2025. What were you moving through then? For me, both months were deeply transformative. The stretch from May 2024 to May 2025 had a deep shadow excavation feel, when life takes the veil off and asks you to see things more clearly. Some of it was painful. Some of it was beautiful.

One bright moment: I had the chance to perform a few incredible, one-of-a-kind shows with White Gourd (Suzanne Belle Stone) on opposite coasts. We’d known each other casually for years, our partners are longtime musical friends and met in the PNW. But we only recently connected deeply during the Lump Performance in Raleigh, NC. That connection felt fated, the kind of synchronicity that reminds me why I do this, and why North Carolina is full of magical connections.

As an artist, I’ve never been interested in “getting ahead.” I’ve seen too many talented people drown themselves in it. I’ve believed in the power of music to build real community, spaces where people feel witnessed, connected, transformed. What matters isn’t the hustle, it’s the relationships, the resonance, the moments where something bigger moves through us, together. That’s where real inspiration and power lives. That’s what keeps me going.

Wandering Tale- September 2024, Eclipse Season

This is a spooky story, not the novelty kind, but a tale that comes with a trigger warning. If you have been in a car accident and feel any trauma from it, you might want to skip this.

What do you do when a tragic premonition comes true—and you’re powerless to stop it?

In early 2024, an artist friend at Lump Gallery in Raleigh, NC, invited me to perform at a fall equinox celebration. Before deciding, I pulled tarot cards for guidance. The deck revealed the Tower, a strong warning of potential danger, advising me to avoid staying at the communal artist housing.

Instead, I stayed with lovely friends in the Durham woods, a beautiful home full of art, warmth and true magic, I am always grateful to stay there. On the day of the event, I accepted an invitation for lunch at the communal artist house. This turned out to be a mistake. While getting burritos afterward, we were involved in a tragic three-car accident. Fortunately, the other artists and I were unharmed, but one of the occupants in another car lost his life.

Months later, the Enterprise insurance adjuster told me that more tragic accidents had occurred that day across the U.S. than any other during his ten years on the job.

There are plenty of theories that ebb and flow between fate and free will. I tend to believe the truth lies somewhere in between. Could I have avoided the accident if I had taken a deeper look at the tarot reading? Maybe. Maybe not. Right now, I’m sitting with it—in reflection, study, and music therapy. I’ll let you know when I find some answers.

Until the next new moon,

KF
